Description of the firm
One of the senior partners, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco is the former Minister of Justice of Portugal, and is currently a member of the Portuguese Parliament and the president of Porto City All Assembly. Before that he was the President of the Porto Law Bar Association. José Pedro was also one of the founders of the first law firm that existed in Portugal, Aguiar- Branco & Associados.
Francisco Pimentel, that is also a Senior Partner, has also been a member of the Portuguese Parliament, and held several positions in the Coimbra Law Bar Association.
JPAB also collaborates with the Portuguese Catholic University, and some of our partners are invited teachers there.
Our Offices are located in centre town, both in Lisbon and Porto, and we also have offices in Covilhã, that is in the centre of Portugal and an important industrial centre, and in Viana do Castelo, in the North of Portugal, and also a relevant economic centre .
Besides these offices, we also have an associated office, which also uses the JPAB brand, in Coimbra, directed by a very prestigious Lawyer -, Dr. Alfredo Castanheira Neves.
This organisation allows us to provide legal assistance all over Portugal, having lawyers near all our clients.
Currently JPAB has eleven partners (five senior and six junior), and we have around fifty lawyers working in the four offices. If we also take in account the associated office we are around sixty lawyers.
We adopted an internal division into different departments, covering what we feel are the most relevant law areas, each one directed by an expert in the area.
Every one of our lawyers speaks and writes fluently, at least, one language other than Portuguese, in order to provide us with the ability to take care of our foreign clients.
We also have one Brazilian lawyer working with us, in order to be able to explore that continental market, with the advantage of the use of the same language.
What we attempt to achieve with this type of organisation is to have a service no less than excellent to all our clients. We normally consider ourselves as a medium but very perfectionist clinic rather than a big central hospital. We don’t do every thing (thou we try to do as much as we can, and we have very strong connections with law offices that are specialised in areas in which we don’t work), but we try to achieve excellence in every thing we do.
We currently represent many companies, both Portuguese and foreign, namely in sectors such as banking, insurance, distribution, textile, new technologies and alternative energies, food catering or real estate.
We’re also law advisers for several public institutions, such as City Alls or public companies.
Our latest bets are on Environmental, Maritime, New Technologies, Medical and Sports law, having created very specialized departments on these fields, all directed by named experts on the subjects.
